Sean Boutilier Dance Academy show
Last Saturday (June 24) I watched Ms. Ogden and Etienne Lavigne dance with the Sean Boutilier Dance Academy at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga, a city near Toronto. They danced both the Black Swan and the White Swan Pas de Deux from Swan Lake. I really enjoyed seeing Ms. Ogden in the National’s Swan Lake last season. I remember very well how moving her performance was, especially after the death of the prince. Her look of sorrow was amazing. In an interview last fall, she said that is one of her favourite parts of the ballet: “The swan is by herself because the prince dies at the end so it’s a pretty emotional moment.” (Vancouver Sun Oct. 3 2005)
Last Saturday, with different choreography, I particularly noticed how well she dances and acts the role of the evil Odile. No-one who knows Ms. Ogden would be surprised that she can dance Odette, but it’s really incredible how well she becomes Odile.
When I saw the show on Saturday evening it was the third of five performances in four days (six in five days if you count the Gala) but both Ms. Ogden and Mr. Lavigne seemed very fresh. Ms. Ogden started her fouettés on a double and ended on what looked like a triple – plus doubles in the middle! As expected, she had wonderful control in the adage of the White Swan Pas de Deux. They did a Curtain call at Intermission, and when Ms. Ogden went forward she looked back to make sure that all the kids behinds her came forward too. But now the sad thing is that I won’t see her dance until August in Quebec.
